Former national team coach Javier Clemente files complaint against Cameroon FA
Former Cameroon coach Javier Clemente on Tuesday filed a complaint with Fifa against the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) for wrongful dismissal.
His two-year contract signed with the body in August 2010 was meant to run until the end of June 2012, but he was sacked last month for failing to meet the team’s chief objective of qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Spaniard refutes the reasons behind his dismissal, accusing the Fecafoot of premeditating his departure even before the end of the qualifying campaign.
“The name of my successor was already circulating in the local press at a time when we still had the chance to qualify for the Gabon-Equatorial Guinea 2012,” Clemente said in a statement published by Camfoot on Tuesday.
Reports say the former Marseille and Real Betis manager is demanding damages totalling 500 million francs CFA (€750,000).
This is not the first time a former coach of the Lions is filing a case against the Cameroon FA. Jules Nyongha, who qualified the team to the 2008 Afcon, challenged the body at the labour inspectorate in Yaounde when he was fired and replaced by German manager Otto Pfister, who eventually led Cameroon to the tournament.
Nyongha was paid damages after several months of legal wrangle.
