The charismatic National Chair of the by Text-Enhance">frontline opposition party, Social Democratic Front (SDF), John Fru Ndi, says he will not accept to be one of president Paul Biya’s 30 senators to be appointed before May 9.

The Chairman as he is fondly called was speaking to reporters in Bamenda after the proclamation of the results of the first ever senate elections in Cameroon in which his party grabbed 14 of the 70 elected seats.

Fru Ndi also used the occasion to congratulate the pioneer senators, hear him; “I want to congratulate the by Text-Enhance">winners and still point out to Cameroonians that they’ve seen the masquerade that was carried out.” Ni John did not explain further what he meant by masquerade but added that the SDF is out to advance the country’s democracy.

Monday’s senate election results saw Paul Biya’s CPDM party sweeping majority seats, 56, representing eight of the ten regions of the country while the SDF got 14 seats from the Adamawa and West regions where the CPDM did not compete.

According to the constitution, the 80-year-old Biya, in power since 1982, will have to appoint the remaining 30 members of the legislative body before May 9 and the 100-seat senate will meet in their first ordinary session on May 14.

Results of the elections which witnessed a voter turnout of 98.25 percent were proclaimed Monday April 29 by the Supreme Court sitting in place of the Constitutional Council.
